I have been asked this a few times, so I figured it might be worthwhile to let the blogspeak for itself.I have asked around, and here are some cut pastes. Of course it makes a difference whether you are coming summer or winter.

Please feel free to add comments of experiences of your own.

Locally: (Southland) If they go to Queenstown

they should drive through to Glenorchy on a fine day!

The big picture winetasting at Cromwell.

Bluff hill

on a fine day for a 360 deg vista; walk the Bluff hill tracks.

Moonshine whiskey museum and John Money Art Gallery in Gore, then the road back via Dolamore Park, Otapiri Gorge to Winton is an interesting drive thru “rugged” farmland close to Ingill.

Stewart Island for a weekend.

The coast road to Tuatapere on fine day – side excursions to Colac Bay, Wakatipu beach, Cosy Nook etc (lookout at Riverton – the hills behind the town –looking over Foveaux strait and farmland etc.).

The Catlins coast road with the beaches etc side excursions.

“I am presuming that they are driving and travelling north to south which may be incorrect!

  •  The Bay of Islands is scenically stunning and weather should be reasonable by August.
  •  If this is their one and only visit to NZ they shouldn’t miss Rotorua

and the boiling mud and volcanic landscapes.

  •  If they are a bit adventurous, there are some good farmstays which incorporate 4 wheel biking over the hills and far away which gives the farming view of the land.
  • Christchurch gardens etc are special in springtime and the Antartic exhibitions might be novel for them.
  • There will still be snow in Queenstown.”
